Insane day

We are sorry to announce that Finland has gone temporarily insane after winning the Ice Hockey World Championship. Normality will ensue within some days :)

A frenchman in Helsinki commented that it is pretty funny when people are about to jump into a fountain in their underwear in the middle of the night, but stop at a red light while crossing the street to get there.

You got to respect the lights, no matter what. It's the same all over nordic countries, if it is red, we stop.

Edit: of course i know people cross on red light, in big as in small cities. I meant after what i have experienced we cross the red light almost never comparing to countries like USA, Brazil, France and other big countries like that

Yep. My parents, not from Stockholm, always called jaywalking "pulling a stockholmer".

Yeah I don't know where Swedes wait for the red. We generally only stop for röd gubbe if there's traffic. That's why we make fun of the visiting Germans tourists who wait in front of an empty street.

You have traffic lights?

Why wouldn't we? o.O

It's not like we can use the northern lights to control traffic.

Now there’s an idea... Some elaborate system of mirrors perhaps.

At first I really didn't get it when I went to countries where pedestrians wouldn't cross a deserted road on a red but then I just compared it to cars. There are plenty of places in the world where people would think I'm silly for not running a red in empty countryside when I can clearly see the intersection is clear. I'm conditioned to see these rules as almost unbreakable when behind the wheel just as some others do on foot.

I think people think they are more likely to get fined for running a red with their car than running a red traffic light

Yeah but honestly even if I know that there is no camera at the intersection and there's nowhere a cop could be hiding I still wouldn't drive through a red unless there was some sort of real emergency.

As an Icelander I only respect the lights if there are children nearby.
